How The Aspens at Turnleaf was built
The Aspens sits in north Fullerton with Harbor Boulevard to the west and Bastanchury Road to the south, which puts it squarely on what used to be the Bastanchury Ranch. Domingo Bastanchury was a French Basque who started with sheep in the 1860s and whose family ended up running what was advertised through the 1920s and early 1930s as the largest orange grove in the world, 2,600 acres of citrus that is the Sunny Hills area on today's map. The grove was big enough that the Pacific Electric built a branch line south across the ranch in 1917 to serve Fullerton, and it carried passengers until 1938.
Turnleaf is the gated development that went in here in 2002. The association covers 212 homes and dates itself to that year, and the Aspens is the flower half of it: Hibiscus, Periwinkle, Poppy and Sunflower, ninety seven houses on seventeen and a half acres. Every street in the wider development is named for something that grows, which reads less like a theme and more like an inventory of what the ground used to do.
