How Fashion Knolls was built
On 10 August 1968 Bullock's opened La Habra Fashion Square on 40 acres at the west end of town. It was the last and largest of the Fashion Square centers the department store built, designed by Welton Becket and Associates, with Bullock's, Buffum's, Joseph Magnin and Silverwoods anchoring roughly 565,000 square feet, and it was the only one of the chain's centers built with a cinema inside it.
Fashion Knolls went up three years later, in 1971, on West Las Lomas Drive a short walk from the mall, and took its name from it. Las Lomas is Spanish for the hills, and the hills are the ones that give the whole city its name, the pass the Portola expedition came through in 1769.
