            History

How Moulton La Paz was built

The Moulton Ranch was subdivided in the early 1960s. Moulton La Paz was built between 1980 and 1989 with a middle year of 1985, while the surrounding hills were still county land. Eighty six percent of residents voted for cityhood on 5 March 1991, and Laguna Hills became a city on 20 December 1991. The city files the community in its Aliso Hills area.

The street names run to Spanish and to elevation: Alta Loma is the high hill, Las Alturas the heights, Los Alamitos the little cottonwoods, with Santa Rosa, Monte Royale, Sundance and Mandeville filling out the rest. The houses are large for their date at about 2,453 square feet and four bedrooms, on lots of roughly a fifth of an acre, and the city has 82 of the 176 properties down as having a private pool, which is close to one in two.

Fossil Reef Park is built on a limestone reef the city dates to roughly 17 million years ago, when much of Orange County lay under a shallow tropical bay. The reef runs six miles long and 300 feet deep and holds scallop shells the city describes as the size of dinner plates.
