How Sancerre was built
Sancerre went up between 1993 and 1997, in the first wave of Newport Ridge, after the 1988 agreement that protected more than 6,000 acres of continuous open space and left 1,600 acres to be built on. The San Joaquin Hills toll road opened in November 1996 with an exit at Newport Coast Drive, halfway through construction, which is what turned this from a remote hillside into a twenty minute drive from the airport.
The name and the streets come from two different parts of France and both are about drink. Sancerre is the hilltop village above the Loire that gives its name to the wine. Fecamp is the Normandy port where Benedictine liqueur is made. Calvados is the Normandy department, and also the apple brandy it produces. Lessay, which carries most of the addresses here, is the Normandy village known for its abbey.
