            History

            How Escala was built

Escala is one of the small ones, four streets and not much more, and the street names are the tell. Calle Frutas, Corte La Cereza, Via Apuesto and Via Ceramica are what a resident recites when giving directions, so the fruit and the cherry come before anything else. A leg of the Prima Deshecha North trail runs along its edge, and the Talega association still carries Escala on its roster of neighborhoods.

Escala is one of more than thirty neighborhoods inside Talega, a 3,510 acre plan drawn for roughly 3,500 homes and built by a long queue of production companies rather than by one. Standard Pacific was the master developer and companies such as Shea Homes took tracts of their own from 1999 onward, which is why the elevations shift from Spanish to Tuscan from one block to the next, and why there is not a single fully custom house anywhere in Talega.

            Lifestyle

            The Escala lifestyle

San Clemente keeps ten beaches of its own along the shore, from North Beach past the pier to Riviera, and the city's Marine Safety division staffs them. The pier itself carries restrooms, metered parking, fire rings and the Amtrak and Metrolink platform at its foot.

The city publishes five trail networks that run from the sand up into the canyons and along the ridgelines. Bikes are welcome on all of them, electric bikes are not allowed on the Beach Trail, dogs are welcome on a leash, and horses are permitted on the Forster Ridgeline, Prima Deshecha and Cristianitos trails. City parks are open from 6 am to 10 pm without a reservation unless a group needs a permit.

            FAQs

            Common questions about Escala

            How big is Escala?

The boundary the city publishes covers 29.2 acres, with 93 addresses on 115 parcels. It is the 49th largest of the fifty San Clemente communities mapped here, ahead only of the Riviera District.

            Which schools serve Escala?

Capistrano Unified's school locator returned Vista del Mar Elementary, Vista del Mar Middle and San Clemente High at all five points tested inside the boundary. Confirm the assignment for a specific address with the district before you rely on it.

What is the fire hazard rating?

The state fire hazard severity map the city publishes splits Escala almost evenly, 14.9 acres in the High class against 14.3 in Moderate. None of the boundary falls in the Very High class, which is unusual for this part of Talega.

            Is there trail access?

            When was Escala recorded?

Tract 16365 was recorded in 2003 at Miscellaneous Maps book 843, pages 35 to 42, over the 2002 map Tract 16337. That is the date the subdivision was filed with the county, not the year any house was built.
