            Talega

A 1,996-acre neighborhood in San Clemente with 3,901 homes on the city's record.

            Overview

            About Talega

Talega is the largest of the fifty communities the City of San Clemente draws on its residential association layer, at 1,996 acres against a next-largest of 433. The city's address record holds 3,901 homes here on 3,430 parcels, at a median parcel of 0.16 acres, and the address layer names 179 distinct streets inside the boundary. All but one of them opens with a Spanish street word: 71 Via, 44 Calle, 32 Corte, 16 Camino, 8 Paseo, 4 Avenida and 3 Plaza, with Cristianitos Road the exception.

Private open space accounts for 1,159 of the 1,996 acres, more than half the community. Three city parks sit inside the line, Liberty Park at 9.0 acres, Tierra Grande Park at 8.4 and Talega Park at 5.4, and 10.7 miles of city trail cross it on seven named routes, the longest being 2.7 miles of the Talega Trail and 2.5 miles of Cristianitos South. Vista Del Mar Elementary and Middle School stands inside the boundary, and Capistrano Unified's own locator returned Vista del Mar Elementary, Vista del Mar Middle and San Clemente High at all five interior points tested.

            History

            How Talega was built

Talega spent longer on paper than most towns take to build. San Clemente rewrote its General Plan in 1982 and dropped a Development District over its four inland ranch properties, which meant nothing could be built out here until the city approved a detailed plan for the whole property. Planning ran from 1982 through 1988, a Talega Valley plan was adopted that year, and it was amended twice more before anyone poured a footing. Construction finally began in 1999 on 3,510 acres north of Avenida Pico, and the last of roughly 3,500 homes across more than thirty neighborhoods was finished in 2015. The golf course at the center of it opened in 2001 as a Fred Couples signature layout, with a Spanish colonial clubhouse and a bell tower.

The name is older than the houses and it came off the back country rather than out of a marketing meeting. Talega Canyon and the creek that runs down it come out of the Santa Ana Mountains and join Cristianitos Creek on what is now Camp Pendleton, where the Marine Corps still calls one of its camps Camp Talega. Talega is an ordinary Spanish word for a cloth bag, and Spanish took it from Andalusian Arabic. The canyon it drains into carries heavier history: in July 1769 a Spanish expedition camped at a spring in Cristianitos Canyon and a priest baptized two dying Native girls there, the first Christian baptism in Alta California, and California marked the site as a landmark in 1956. One of the trails through Talega and the street that fronts Talega Park still carry the Cristianitos name.

            Lifestyle

            The Talega lifestyle

San Clemente keeps ten beaches of its own along the shore, from North Beach past the pier to Riviera, and the city's Marine Safety division staffs them. The pier itself carries restrooms, metered parking, fire rings and the Amtrak and Metrolink platform at its foot.

The city publishes five trail networks that run from the sand up into the canyons and along the ridgelines. Bikes are welcome on all of them, electric bikes are not allowed on the Beach Trail, dogs are welcome on a leash, and horses are permitted on the Forster Ridgeline, Prima Deshecha and Cristianitos trails. City parks are open from 6 am to 10 pm without a reservation unless a group needs a permit.

            FAQs

            Common questions about Talega

            How big is Talega?

The boundary the City of San Clemente publishes covers 1,996 acres, with 3,901 addresses and 3,430 parcels inside it. That makes it the largest of the fifty San Clemente communities mapped on this site, and roughly four and a half times the size of the next one, Forster Ranch at 433 acres.

            Which schools serve Talega?

Capistrano Unified's school locator returned Vista del Mar Elementary, Vista del Mar Middle and San Clemente High at all five points tested inside the boundary. Vista Del Mar Elementary and Middle School is itself inside Talega. Confirm the assignment for a specific address with the district before you rely on it.

How much of Talega is open space?

The city's general plan land use layer gives 1,159 acres inside the boundary the designation Open Space Private, which is 58 percent of the community. A further 34 acres are Open Space Public, and three city parks sit inside the line.

What is the fire hazard rating?

The state fire hazard severity map the city publishes splits the boundary three ways: 1,061 acres High, 690 acres Very High and 234 acres Moderate. The Very High acreage sits along the northern and eastern edges, and it is worth raising with an insurer early.

How old are the Talega neighborhoods?

The parent map, Tract 13872, was recorded in 1991. The eighteen maps that cover two percent or more of the boundary were recorded between 1991 and 2005, so the individual neighborhoods differ by more than a decade in when their lots were laid out. A recorded map date is when the subdivision was filed, not when a house was built.
