            History

How Fountain Crest Condominiums was built

Fifty seven small homes on two acres fronting Brookhurst Street, built in 1985 and 1986, most of them two bedrooms and around 750 square feet. That size and that date tell the same story: by the mid 1980s Fountain Valley had run out of farmland and was building on its leftover street frontage instead, at a scale the tract builders of the 1960s would not have bothered with.

The land was farmed until it was not. This flat between the Santa Ana River and Bolsa Chica was part of Rancho Las Bolsas, a 33,460 acre grant confirmed in 1834 to Maria Catarina Ruiz, and it passed to sugar beet and vegetable growers after the American takeover. Around 1896 Thomas B. Talbert's family bought more than 300 acres of peat and swampland here and opened a general store, and the settlement that grew around it took the family name. The post office opened in 1899 and the Pacific Electric ran its Santa Ana to Huntington Beach cars through Talbert from 5 July 1909.
