How Maison de Fleur was built
This is the far northwest corner of Fullerton, pressed up against the Buena Park line with Rosecrans Avenue along the south edge and Beach Boulevard the nearest big road to the west. The history worth knowing here is underfoot. The low ridge these homes sit on is the Coyote Hills, and the ground just across Rosecrans spent years being dug into rather than built on. It was known as the Emery Borrow Pit, and between 1956 and 1973 highway crews hauling fill out of the hillside cut straight through fossil beds.
The homes are recent by comparison. Roughly a hundred attached townhomes went up here around 1990, two stories with garages attached, on four short lanes that were all given one naming theme to match the French name of the community, which means house of flowers: Camellia, Primrose, Wistaria and Flame Flower. The hills did not all get built on. East of here the rest of the Coyote Hills ridge is still open ground, including about 510 acres held by Chevron that make up the largest undeveloped piece of land in north Orange County.
