How Laurelwood Townhomes was built
Laurelwood was built as a planned community in the early 1970s and the City of Tustin now treats it as one, listing the Laurelwood Residential District in its historical resources survey as a 1973 development bounded by Tustin Ranch Road, Walnut Avenue, the Santa Ana Freeway and an irrigation channel, with a deliberate mix of single family and attached housing and its planning intact. The homes themselves date mostly from 1974.
The street names are the giveaway that somebody planned this. They run almost straight through the alphabet in plants: Barberry, Beechnut, Clover, Conifer, Cranberry, Dahlia, Dogwood, Foxglove, Fuschia, Hazel, Juniper, Larch, Lichen, Medlar. Nisson Road, at the edge, is named for the Nisson family, who settled in Tustin in 1876; Mathias Nisson was a Danish farmer and a director of the Santa Ana Valley Irrigation Company that first brought reliable water to these fields.
