How Columbia Westmont was built
Columbia Westmont went up in 1997 and 1999, a gated group of a hundred and sixty or so houses at the north end of Tustin Ranch. Its streets run almost straight through the alphabet in surnames: Allen, Cook, Ferdig, Griset, Hatch, Loucks, McDougall, Nitta, Penman, Young. That is not decoration. When Tustin Ranch was laid out, the names assigned to its streets were those of civic leaders and of Tustin men who died in the world wars.
Some of those names still attach to people the city has written about. Donald Griset was a Tustin citrus farmer who built the Montesilla mobile home park on his own former grove land in 1966, and the city's historical record describes the Grisets as a large family with many branches in Tustin and Santa Ana, one of whom served as mayor of Santa Ana. The street names on this side of Tustin Ranch read as a list of the people who were here before the houses were.
